Google's algorithm scans the internet to find websites and indexes them in its database. When a user types a search within Google, Google runs through its database of indexed websites and generates the best results for that search. Google provides webmasters with information about what they should pay attention to and what should be avoided when creating websites and content, but it doesn’t give away all the details to protect its algorithm. As a Google SEO expert and former Google Ireland's Search Quality employee, my job is to follow Google's guidelines for webmasters and combine them with the expertise I gained in over 18 years of SEO experience to determine what will rank your website on page 1 of Google search results.

 

What Types of Content Does Google Like?

Achieving the status of authority in Google’s eyes is many business owners and webmasters'  ultimate goal. To do that, it's important to publish authoritative, well-written content that positions you as an expert and a thought leader in your industry. Whether you’re developing a service page, article, or blog post, your primary objective should always be to create the best possible page in your industry about the specific topic you're covering. When you’ve nailed the reference piece of content for each topic, your focus must shift to the technical optimisations you need to get that content to rank high on Google. How Long Does It Take to See Results from a Google SEO Campaign?

The amount of time it takes before you start seeing results from your Google SEO campaign ultimately depends on your website's current organic search performance. If you have a brand new website or are developing one, it may take anything from 6 to 12 months to get any results from SEO. If My Google Rankings Dropped, What Should I Do?

Start with reviewing the technical aspects of your website that might be blocking crawlers from accessing your pages:

  1. XML Sitemap. Do you have the most up-to-date XML Sitemap in Google Search Console? If not, resubmit it.

  2. 404 errors. These errors can negatively impact your rankings and result in a poor user experience for visitors who land on these pages, leading to higher bounce rates.

  3. Page speed analysis. How does your site score in Google’s PageSpeed Insights tool? Page speed is a ranking factor for Google, and it impacts user experience, which is another ranking factor.

  4. Robots.txt file. Ensure that this is configured properly so search engines can crawl your site efficiently and index your pages properly. A small syntax mistake may prevent crawlers from accessing your most important pages, resulting in them being dropped from Google's index after a while.

  5. Backlink audit. Ensure there are no toxic links from spammy websites pointing to your pages. If your SEO consultant finds some, disavow them promptly to disassociate your website from them in Google’s mind. If your website has been targeted by spammers, I would suggest talking with an SEO expert to solve this issue and not try to fix it yourself. If done incorrectly, there can be major consequences.

  6. Missing meta tags. SEO tools like Screaming Frog can tell you whether any of your pages have missing critical on-page SEO elements, like title tags, meta descriptions, H1, H2, H3 headers, and ALT text for images, helping you develop an action plan to fix any drop in rankings.

Assess the quality of your website content and ask yourself the following questions:

  1. Is your content educational, as in not exclusively focusing on acquiring customers but on increasing their knowledge?

  2. Is your content authoritative, as in written by expert voices in the industry who have the right credentials to cover your topics? Credentials, if present, are a huge advantage. If not, positive reviews can also help build authority.

  3. Is your content trustworthy, as in clearly written by an industry expert? This is especially important for eCommerce SEO, as your website should inspire trust first and foremost.

  4. E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness): Does my content add value to my visitors? Is it really helpful to improve their knowledge and life?

 

Prioritise Your Existing Pages 

Your existing website content has already been discovered and indexed by Google. If it’s missing any important elements, like on-page optimizations, these are the first issues you must address, as they will have the highest impact on your rankings. These elements include, in order of importance:

  • Page Title

  • H1

  • Other headers (H2, H3, etc.)

  • On-page content

  • Image ALT text

  • Meta descriptions (impacting search results click-through rate, which in turn impacts rankings)

  • Internal links and anchor text

 

Create an SEO Content Plan

In order to build experience, expertise, authority, and trustworthiness (E-E-A-T), it’s important that you create a robust content plan that will not only drive traffic to your website but will also educate and engage your visitors. As a starting point, consider creating an information or resource centre, including FAQs, YouTube how-to videos, and articles or blog posts. From here, you can expand your content creation efforts to keep generating high-quality content that makes both your audience and search engines keep coming back. Remember to implement an internal linking strategy to connect your new and existing content, using keyword-rich anchor text to hyperlink relevant pages, making them easier for search engines to find and understand.

Your website's primary goal is to provide value to your visitors and potential customers, so don’t focus on Google; focus on the user experience. If your visitors find your website's content valuable and helpful, they will keep coming back and sharing that content with their friends or colleagues, which means your pages will get more traffic and ultimately convert visitors into customers.
